SUMMARY:Shelterbelts and Eco-Buffers: Agroforestry Systems for Resilience
DESCRIPTION:AWES and CARA are pleased to present ‘Shelterbelts and Eco-buffers: Agroforestry Systems for Resilience’ October 29\, 2019 from 3-8 pm in Consort\, AB. \nThis workshop will cover the design and implementation of Shelterbelts and Eco-buffers on Agrocultural land\, with a focus on the northern fescue grassland ecoregion. AWES will advise on how to customize your shelterbelt or eco-buffer design to provide pollinator habitat\, fruit production\, water quality enhancement and more! \nThroughout the evening participants will develop the skills to develop tree planting plans. We will walk through tree planting designs using worksheets and other resources provided. \nThe workshop will wrap up with a field visit of a future shelterbelt planting location for a hands on learning experience. \nThere is a nominal fee of $30/person. \nA catered dinner and refreshments will be provided. \nPlease come dressed for the weather as we will be venturing to a nearby field site. \nFor details and registration\, contact CARA at 403-664-3777 or cara-3@telus.net \n

SUMMARY:Train the Trainer: Completing a Successful Planting Project
DESCRIPTION:Anyone can plant a tree\, but how is a large-scale planting project developed? During this workshop in Parkland County\, The Agroforestry and Woodlot Extension Society will teach you to develop and execute efficient and effective project plans by helping you create procedures that can be applied to your county’s planting activities. \nLearn to complete a planting program on private or county lands regardless of whether the outcome is a shelterbelt\, eco-buffer\, riparian buffer or bioengineering for site restoration. \n  \nAWES will take you through the following seven steps to cover the entire process of completing a planting project on private or county lands: \n1.      The complications of planting sites on private lands \n2.      Setting long term objectives and levels of success \n3.      Assessing private land sites \n4.      Determining complicating factors \n5.      Planning and implementing planting projects \n6.      Evaluating outcomes of planting projects \n7.      Assessing levels of success \n  \nA field component will take participants through an overview of the site assessment process and will provide a verbal and written recommendation on how to appropriately prescribe and restore and the demonstration site. After completing the workshop\, participants will be able to conduct a basic site assessment and respond to most questions and concerns from landowners. \n  \nLunch will be provided. \nPlease register through Parkland County at 780-968-8888 Ext 8261 or Krista.Quesnel@parklandcounty.com by August 9th\, 2019

SUMMARY:Building for the Berries Workshop in Grande Prairie County
DESCRIPTION:The prairies – including the Grande Prairie region – are home to a diversity of fruit producing species bursting with valuable antioxidants and other nutrients. Yet these species continue to be underutilized in our diets. On February 5th\, join the County of Grande Prairie No. 1 and the Agroforestry and Woodlot Extension Society for a hands-on workshop on low-tech\, ecologically-based fruit production\, harvesting\, and processing. The workshop will begin with a presentation that covers: \n\nPromising fruit species for Alberta\nHow to design\, establish\, and maintain your own “food forest”\nLow-tech strategies for harvesting and processing fruit\n\nFollowing this presentation\, participants will get the chance to build their own berry sorters that will make processing saskatoons\, chokecherries\, currants\, and haskaps a breeze! Participants need to bring their own drill and bits (1/8” for making pilot holes\, along with Phillips and #2 Robertson). \nSnacks and refreshments will be provided. There will be enough material to build 20 berry sorters (the first 20 to register). Participants will build 1 berry sorter per group or family. \nRegister via Eventbrite. For further information\, please contact Jill Henry 780-532-9727 or email jhenry@countygp.ab.ca
