SUMMARY:Agroforestry Basics & Cultivation Webinar
DESCRIPTION:Agroforestry can be an effective method to revitalize the soil and improve land productivity\, when your land has become worn down due to repeated exposure to rotational crops or livestock. Agroforestry is a land management practice that integrates trees\, shrubs and other perennial plants with agricultural or livestock systems\, thereby offering numerous environmental and economic benefits. Agroforestry approaches ecosystem health with a holistic viewpoint compared to that of the traditional crop-centric practices. The various types of agroforestry techniques can help improve soil health and water management\, provide erosion control and create microclimate regulation\, as well as increase biodiversity and economic diversification. Join our Agroforestry Specialist\, Winston Gamache\, and Technician\, Teresa Kozakewich\, who will present on the basics and cultivation of agroforestry\, and take questions on January 7\, 2025\, at 7:00pm. Additional information will be provided on how AWES can use the 2 Billion Tree Program to help fund and implement planting projects on your land! \nAccess to the webinar will be provided by link\, upon the completion of your registration. DESCRIPTION:It’s that time of year…Spring is coming! As a landowner\, have you ever selected a variety of plant species\, gone through the laborious task of planting them\, watering\, weeding and other general maintenance to ensure their survival? However\, despite your best efforts\, your newly planted seedlings mostly die… So\, what exactly happened? It could be a number of contributing factors such as improper plant species selected for the growing region or it could be due to environmental pressures such as competition from other vegetative species or browse pressure from wildlife. On February 19th\, 2025\, at 7:00PM\, tune into the Land Stewardship Center’s live\, online workshop “Planting Native Trees and Shrubs\,” where our Program Director\, Tomas Sokolon\, is providing direction on how to pick the right species for your land and some common errors to avoid during the planting period.\n\n\nYou will be able to access this online workshop through the link provided to you upon registration. DESCRIPTION:After a successful workshop in Didsbury\, this past May\, we’re excited to keep the momentum going and provide tools for riparian restoration.\n\n\n\nRiparian areas—where land meets water—are some of the most vibrant parts of the landscape. These zones thrive because nearby water supports a rich mix of trees\, shrubs\, and wildlife. But when vegetation is lost\, waterways can deteriorate\, dry out\, and become difficult to restore. That’s where we can help. \nJoin us on December 10\, 2025\, at 7:00 p.m. for a webinar led by our Agroforestry Specialist\, Winston Gamache. He will walk through a range of planting strategies for riparian and wetland restoration\, with a focus on erosion control and live staking. The session will conclude with an overview of potential funding opportunities for these types of projects\, followed by a Q&A period to explore your riparian planting questions in more depth.

DESCRIPTION:Summary:  \nAgroforestry is a sustainable land management practice that intentionally incorporates trees and shrubs into agricultural operations. More specifically\, silvopasture is the integration of trees and livestock to create a mutually beneficial system. Over time\, landowners began to manage larger areas of land\, relying on larger\, more specialized equipment to do so. More recently\, many farmers are facing difficulties in conventional production and are looking into regenerative agriculture to increase both outputs and resiliency. In this webinar we will discuss how trees can be a part of the solution. \nWe have the wonderful opportunity to be hosted by Alberta AgriSystems Living Lab\, for this talk. She holds a Bachelor’s of Science in Biological Sciences\, recently graduating from the University of Alberta. Mya is a Biologist-in-Training with the Alberta Society of Professional Biologists. She has previous experience as an Agriculture Research Assistant working with a variety of pulse crops. She has a passion for Conservation Biology\, specifically relating to Climate Change and the influence of human activity. In her spare time\, Mya enjoys volleyball\, cooking\, traveling\, and all things outdoors.
